I thought I wasn't good enough for Test cricket - James Anderson

Come Thursday, when England face New Zealand in the second and last Test of the series in Birmingham, James Anderson has a big milestone in sight. If picked, he surpasses Alastair Cook to become the most capped Test cricketer for England, with 162 appearances.

"It's been an incredible 15 years really," Anderson said. "Knowing how much Cooky [Alastair Cook] played it, makes me very proud I've actually got to this point.

A scrawny Anderson began life in the Test arena 18 years ago, in a Test against Zimbabwe at Lord's in 2003 - an outing that left him with a lot of self-doubts.

"I thought I wasn't good enough. I thought it was a huge step up from county cricket. I remember Nasser didn't have a fine leg for me and I went for quite a few runs. My first ball was a no-ball as well so there were a lot of nerves there and I did feel like this was maybe a step too far for me at that point," Anderson recalled.

Anderson heads into his milestone game with 616 wickets to his name - the most in Tests among active cricketers and fourth overall, behind Muttiah Muralitharan (800), Shane Warne (708) and Anil Kumble (619). The 38-year-old pacer revealed that it took him a few years - and some notable performances against high level oppositions - to accept that he belonged at the highest level of the game.

"It took a few years. I think putting in some performances against the better sides in the world - no disrespect to Zimbabwe - but playing against teams like South Africa and Australia and India. Once you put in performances against the top teams in the world, that's when you can feel like you can actually perform at that level. So it did take a few years and a few tours around the world to make me think I could actually do it."

Reminiscing on all that he's gone through in a long career, Anderson expressed his pride at being able to move past a stress fracture that threatened to derail his international career while it was still at a nascent stage.

"I'm proud of the fact that I've overcome little hurdles throughout my career and they've made me stronger. The stress fracture was like hitting the reset button I guess. I'd gone through a lot of changes in my action before that and that stress fracture was probably a Godsend," he said.

"It made me go back to my old action and since then I've felt really comfortable and got more consistent. That's really helped me and makes me feel proud I got stronger from that and never looked back."

Anderson reckoned it was a 'difficult time' in the England camp following Ollie Robinson's suspension on grounds of his old racist and sexist tweets.

"As players we are trying to learn from this realise it's important to try to get educated around these issues," Anderson said. "We continue to do that with the ECB and PCA, we've been doing workshops before the series to improve ourselves as people, basically. To try to make sure this doesn't happen."

Anderson also revealed that Robinson made a sincere apology to his England teammates. "I think it [apology] has been accepted. He stood up in front of the group and apologised."

"You could see how sincere and upset he was. As a group we appreciate he's a different person now. He's done a lot of maturing and growing since then and he's got the full support of the team.

"I think as we've talked about, the Tweets coming 10 years ago obviously there was initial shock there with the language that was used. But there was remorse. I think he's definitely changed as a person and he's definitely improved from this as well, learn from these mistakes I guess.

Anderson stressed on the need for the right kind of education in sensitive subjects such as these, and to drive home the point that even at a young and experienced age, the language used was unacceptable.

"That language and the subjects are obviously not acceptable. Yes we do make mistakes, everyone does and as people we've got to try to improve and make sure this sort of stuff doesn't happen and make sure people are aware it's not acceptable.

"I remember being that age and you do make mistakes. You're very young and inexperienced. It's just a case of trying to make sure that even at that age we send a message that this is unacceptable language to use," he said.
